Can i ask why people like running native and not a lower resolution? Ive heard this many times ive just wondered why people prefer turning down graphics instead of resolution?

That NBC review of the GS43VR shows the same now infamous "3 screw design" for the CPU heatsink. Clearly all these manufacturers assess this design is just fine right? We can't really say this is a problem on the new Alienwares at this point. Razer, MSI, AW, all using 3 screw heatsink designs on the CPU. I'll even highlight NBC clearly states the GS43VR throttles when under stress test loads. This is pretty standard on "thin and light" gaming notebooks.

I think Dell prefers a quieter system over maximum cooling.

Most of the time, the display scaler really softens the image. I've just noticed this after extensive trial and error through the years. Some monitors are better than others at this. My Dell 27" 1440P monitor is no slouch, but I can 100% tell when the image is clearly softer because it's running at less than native. Smaller monitors can mask this effect - so on the 13" screen, it may not be bad at all. It's just that since I can barely tell the difference a lot of time between med/high/ultra - I wonder why not just go for less taxing eye candy settings that offer marginal picture improvement?

I should add, that as you approach 4K, running at say, 1800P or even 1600P - seeing the difference is much harder. I just think 1080P upscaled tends to look soft on my 27" monitor. As you go under 1080P - the image is likely soft, because well, it is soft because there are less pixels going around. I don't know if that made any sense.

exactly @iunlock already showed the laptops can be made to run cool enough with the 3 screw design.

maybe it was because it throttled quicker, but the 13 did preform a lot cooler on its lowest core than the bigger GS43VR. 66C vs 76C assuming repaste/correct heatsing pressure i could see this little laptop running fairy cool

Yes it makes complete sense but for a smaller screen i dont see this as an issue. Larger screens, yes definitely!

Funny thing is that now the order has shipped, the EDD says "the order has shipped". Since its UPS I'm hoping/guessing it won't actually still be dec 8th...

My last 2 dell orders took 5 days and 6 days respectively
Both had a weekend in the middle too
So you should receive a lot sooner, as soon as it get to UK you will get next day, with delivery slot 1 hour ( delivered by UK Mail)

    Enjoy

Doom is a pure joy on the 1060, one seriously well optimised game.
Gears was fun too give that a solid 8/10

Those dates I quoted were from when the syncreon tracking showed "departed manufacturing facility"

Hi all, hopefully this is the right place to ask this. Would the OLED panel produce better/worse battery life than the 1080p panel? Or would the differences be negligible between the two?

OLED uses more power it's a trade off but such an amazing screen by all accounts well worth for the majority

Can't be cos the desktop 1060 is 10% faster then the laptop version and you said 70s whilst he said 70-80s. He must be running on high to get more fps than you.

Anyway I didn't get a case that was an option and wish I did as it would of been cheaper so I bought a AW vindicator 14 case because it should fit. It's a little bit wider. And it's roughly as deep as it. Not happy at cost but needed to protect it as I'll move it from room to room to garden house aswell

I'm going to repaste and use a torque tool I have on the cooling solution. That should give it a even pressure. I'm also going to overclock the gpu and undervolt the CPU.

I don't think the design is somehow a flaw, every time someone does some changes it immediately gets slaughtered. iunlock has shown the potential of this design.

But I agree on the cheap paste... A premium product should have premium paste also. It's like every brand forget this or don't care...

The 1060 is about double the performance that the 970m was and that was not a slouch. The pascal cards really are a new level of performance in laptops

Alienware stated that they now use the same trackpad as with the 15 en 17 which is pretty decent. It's not as good as a macbook trackpad but it's a big improvement over the 13r1/r2 trackpad.

Note: its best to turn off palm rejection since it doesn't allow tracking while any of the keys are pressed.

My order is still in pre-production but card has been charged. It still says 14/12 as expected delivery date. I have been in touch with the customer support folks since i need it before 14/12 but they haven't been of much help. Any ideas as to how to expedite the process?

I think you may be right - looked over some benchmarks on the webs. Should be right around 60-65fps at ultra on a desktop 1060. 90s at 1080P. Pretty big performance hit going to 1440P! My OC'd 1060 manages to squeak out low 70s at 1440P, but just barely (at Ultra).

I may have to look at running 1080P with this game, even on my external monitor to see if it over-softens the image too much. I'd prefer this game stay well above 60. Not that right around 60 is all that bad - otherwise I'll drop IQ down to high.

When you guys look at your order status, how do you even get noticed about "pre-production" or "in production". My status bar shows "confirmed, shipped, delivered" only. I don't see any other increments!

Also - for those that received your unit, can you tell me the exact model of the DDR4 ram you got (stock 2400Mhz)?

I'd also love a picture of the AC adapter with something that can help me gauge the size of the thing in the picture (probably the AW13 itself?).

Mine (US Order) is also still showing "confirmed", but I've been informed that mine is already out of production and on its way stateside. It will not show shipped until it reaches the US hub and is assigned a FedEx number.

Description for 'Pre production' and 'I-production' is exactly the same so maybe it is just matter of categorization in different countries. I ordered on 28/11 and hope to get it by 11/12 ish otherwise I will be in trouble.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe our [US] orders are processed differently [order-status update system wise], and we normally do not see "pre-production/production" tags. It would just jump straight to "shipped".

    Order placed : 11/28/16
    Status: Confirmed
    ETD: 12/6-13/16

The DELL order status for US shoppers is "simplified" (Confirmed->Shipped->Delivered) ... my delivery range was 11/29-12/7, and now it has been shipped (12/1), and will be delivered sometime Monday (12/5). Within the range. By the way, where ever the laptop is originally coming from (China), for my US location the pick up is from Hawthorne, CA, that is California, not CANADA :) ...

    Interesting you say this,

I check my order status and it gives me a fedex tracking number, when I check the tracking on fedex.com it says it will be deliver today, but I called fedex and they tell me they haven't even picked the package!

Sooooo I had a friendly chat with dell, it is aggravating and such inconvenience ;)

I don't see how that is Dell's fault, sounds like FedEx tracking was messed up. One Christmas I ordered something for my Father-in-law and UPS tracking showed it was out for delivery. I hung around the house all night, but never got the delivery. When I called UPS they stated the tracking was wrong and it was still at another hub 3hrs away.

I've also seen FedEx recycle tracking numbers... Probably not related, but just another example tracking failure.

@jedolley , I called fedex to confirm whether the package was going to be deliver today and they told me that the sender hasn't contact them to pick the package up.

To me, it's dell's issue, I bought a product from dell not fedex, why would dell post a tracking number is if hasn't even been picked up.

And you are correct, fedex recycles tracking numbers, on another recent order from dell I got the tracking number from dells order status website, went to track it and it said it had been delivered, when it hadn't, then I realized the delivery date was from 2014....so I then called dell and they gave me the right tracking.

Everything is automated these days so its not uncommon for a tracking number to be listed once the label is created. However, in those cases the tracking info should have stated "Shipping Label Created" or "Ready for pickup"... The fact that it showed it was scheduled to be delivered today, is a FedEx issue. If you think otherwise, you're being unreasonable.

For example, I sold something on ebay the other day, created the shipping label that night, and it had the status "Shipping Label Created" and that status only changes once I drop it off to FedEx. Same thing applies here, except FedEx will probably pick it up from Dell.

How much of a discount could I squeeze out of a Dell sales rep through chat? Is 10% off realistic or am I stretching it?

You just missed the discount earlier I guess. But yes, i have seen people here get over 10 percent. Try and get that much.

Earlier in this thread one person mentioned an employee you could contact that was generous with discounts. I think you should look him up, if you havent already.
