I called into dell tech support because I have the same problem as you with the throttling and they are sending me a new motherboard. It is weird that my cpu throttles down to 800 mghz and my gpu load drop to 50 during gaming. Hwinfo reported it was prochot throttle but the temperature was 76 when this happened. Throttlestop can usually avoid this but after gaming last night and experiencing it a dozen times I just got fed up with it.

@sluggz: yeah i had the exact same problem. tried everything, throttlestop, different bios versions, intel drivers, but nothing helped. now after the mainboard switch i cant oc my GPU, because the games crash after a few minutes. happens on stock bios and ons premas bios. i am pretty fed up with the aw17r2 as well. dont know what to do now. without oc the laptop works just fine, so i cant contact dell about that. overclocking isnt their concern...

Well hopefully I dont have that issue. with the new gpu. I really wish they would send me a better cpu though. The 4710hq kind of sucks

@sluggz: dont get yout hopes up too high. i got a new mainboard in december and one two weeks ago. both times with the 4710hq cpu.
maybe i try and make a clean windows 10 installation. maybe i can oc the gpu with that OS. not being able to overclock the gpu sucks a lot!!

Well the guy came and replaced my board and now my computer doesnt work. The nvidia driver fails then the computer bsod's everytime I click on anything using nvidia (control panel, geforce experience, driver uninstalls. I just did a complete clean install of windows 10 per tech supports advice and the problem still persists. My computer is pretty much bricked.

Try to get a full refund and buy the new 17R3. If Alienware resists to be cooperative try posting your case on facebook and twitter. Dont insult them, but make your case very clear and that you are a very unsatisfied customer. That helps a lot sometimes. Good luck anyways!

If you have a 361 driver installed then get rid of it in Windows safe mode and install a 359.xx driver or any other driver instead...

Yea I did that. Also got on the phone with tech support and they tried to install their "golden driver" in safe mode. Still wouldn't install the driver and I am now being shipped what will be my third motherboard. Really wish they would just send me an R3 because I can almost guarantee the 4710 is going to have throttling issues under load still

They will never give you a 17R3. If you get very lucky, you will get a full refund. But you have to put a lot of pressure on alienware to do so. They will try to talk you out of it and keep sending you technicians with mainboards...

Can you link the Original vbios please?

I have the Alienware 17 R3 (It has the 6820HK with the GTX 980m 4GB. to just confirm same model) It also has 4K screen. If that matters. I couldn't figure out how to pm you.

    Thank you :)

People that are running this on their 970m could you please tell me the max OC settings you have tried?

I've been messing around trying to get the highest clocks i can...I've taken it up to +160 core and +295 mem and its still working fine

I just want to see what other people are able to push their 970's to...and to have something to compare mine to.

    Thanks!

edit: should i be upping the voltage with this? I have the 240watt adapter also..

Question, what program are people using to overclock? And what version? I used the latest version of after burner and the slider numbers go crazy and jump to 40k.

What's the most current driver that has no issues? I noticed there's a newly released driver on the nvidia site released on January 27, 361.75 maybe that fixes some things.

Here is my default bios if you can do it :)

I don't think I noticed a factory rom for the 4gb 980m here. Could anyone upload theirs? I flashed my 17 R3 with the 4gb 980m with the mod from the main page and now I am having some issues.

Edit: originally was on 361.75 when I flashed it. After flashing first thing I noticed was my external monitor cannot be detected anymore. Tried flashing the rom again and error message was that no nvidia card/display found or something like that.

Thanks! Is there a way to flash it through command prompt? Or, do I drag the new rom over the modme file? Whenever I right click to being up extra options the computer glitches out pretty badly.

Edit: Opened up notepad through search bar and opened up the modme file and directed it to the default rom provided above. Flashed with no problem. Thanks guys! Shame the mod doesn't work for me.

    glad man
but if you want to flash prema vbios do it with 359.06
    --------

so after messing with my systems and got 22 times video driver crash from firestrike, 1 graphical artifact alongside 1 blue screen tdr failure from heaven benchmark, 2 driver crash from valley,
running 35 times in total for benchmark with several cores set (220-500) and several memoy set (310-500) and 5 hours in gaming stable at 250/400 (3 hours on fallout 4 nice stable 60 fps, 2 hours on assassin creed syndicate average @43 fps on maxed settings).

i got several conclusions for my system with 180 watt psu and stock voltage
    1. max gpu clock (30x multipliers for cpu) for all-benching is stable at 240/370(including 1 hours fire strike loop) anything above that crash/blusecreen or even an artifact on heaven.
    2. i can do straight several hours gaming with slightly higher clock @250/400 w/o a single crash/artifacts and with increased multipliers at 33 but slightly underclocked my pcieclock to 100.9936.
    3. need 240 watt or even 330 watt
    4. already need to get rid the stock paste on my 1 year system

    What CPU do you have?

I have a 4710hq in my 17R2 but my gpu crashes at 100/200mhz in games. That is so crazy. I am on 359.06, repasted my GPU and CPU, temperatures are low as f***. I think i have to switch to win 10. i am currently running on win 8.1. maybe that will change something..

How much of an overclock do you think I could get on a gtx 970m using a 180w power supply? My CPU is a 6700hq which is slightly more power efficient than the 4710hq.

What exactly are the issues with the new drivers? I'm on 361.75, and I don't think i have any problems. I have a 970m though.. maybe its only with 980m?

I can connect fine to an external display..are there other problems that i could be experiencing that i'm not aware of?

    Thanks!

Yea it's strange. I did also flash it while being on 359.06 which is the "recommended" driver I guess. It did successfully flash but again external monitor is not detected. Unless I missed a discussion from way earlier, I refuse to believe everybody who flashed is not using an external monitor. Not sure if the monitor matters, my external is the 34" dell curved 3440x1440 monitor. Maybe I just have a defective card?
