Only if you're hitting the power limiter already, which you can see by looking in GPUz - it will say "Pwr" for the "PerfCapReason" variable on the sensors page of GPUz. That's also assuming that you're not at the maximum stable overclock for your VRAM already anyway. Increasing the Power Limit won't increase your VRAM stability though, so I doubt it will make a difference. The only scenario where you'll be able to overclock your VRAM higher with a higher power limit is if you're currently artificially limiting your VRAM overclock with the intention to stay under the power limit. The power limit won't affect the ability of your VRAM to clock to a certain stable frequency, instead the increased power limit will just allow you to run a higher VRAM overclock (if stable) without hitting the power limit.

ive never actually tried the ram by itself, ive had the core at 200mhz with memory at 300 and the artifacts happened...im going to flash this tomorrow so ill know then.

Well, if you want to see if the increased power limit lets you overclock your VRAM further, then you'd need to test your max stable VRAM overclock both before flashing & after, while keeping the core at stock (or at least a known stable overclock). The increased power limit shouldn't increase your VRAM overclock stability though, it will just allow you more headroom to overclock before hitting the power limit, at which point the GPU throttles it's core if it hits the power limit.

hi my notebook is 17 R4 with Micron GTX1070

is there any vbios update officially from DELL ? this gpu not even stable in standard clock, i must manually underclock the memory -350 Mhz to make it stable, otherwise it crash in gaming and small artifact occurs

If it's still in warranty I'd get a replacement, because it's not acceptable that it won't hold stock clocks.

There was somebody with 1070 that came with the fix from the factory. I can't recall his/her name though.

    Hello,

First are you sure to have micron's memory ? (use gpu-z if you're not)
If indeed, you have micron's one, you have to downclock the memory frequency...

What kind of a crash are you getting, what does it look like on the screen when it crashes? For instance, the Micron related overclocking instability crashes are often typified by a checkerboard artifact type crash - so you see checkerboard-like shapes on the screen.

You could also try underclocking the core of your GPU to rule out that the actual GPU core is unstable - to see if the crashing stops after underclocking the GPU core.

What temperatures is your GPU & CPU getting to while gaming? Praps if one or both are running very hot (in the 90's), then this might cause some instability?

Maybe you have unstable sytem RAM. All kinds of weird crashes can happen if your RAM is bad/unstable. You could try running Memtest 86 v7.4 ( https://www.memtest86.com/download.htm), the bootable USB stick version, which will check your system RAM for stability. (Note I'm not talking about the VRAM memory on your GPU, this is your system RAM I'm talking about).

If your laptop is still in warranty, then get Dell/Alienware support to sort it out for you, you don't want to be running hardware that has minor or major defects.

Yes there is same error like checkboards like micron memory issue while after 5mins of gameplay... my GPU nevers goes above 75c . I also try underclocking gpu -100 but same error again like checkboards freezing screen.. should i need to update vbios which mention in this post beta bios? Or should i need to undervolt GPU?

If you're not overclocking your GPU, in other words if it's happening at stock GPU clocks & settings, then I think you can realise it's a hardware fault - you'll easily be able to get it fixed or replaced under warranty. Are you still in warranty? It's better to let the manufacturer fix the problem when it's such a glaring significant hardware fault. Not all (hardly any) Micron VRAM containing GPUs fail at stock settings, normally it's just when overclocking too far - so Micron VRAM is not really a problem or a negative in general.

I think there's people here in this thread that have flashed a Micron vBIOS, search this thread & see if they're the same laptop model - compatibility issues & bricking issues are a concern doing that & you should be very certain you've got the correct vBIOS before you flash. You didn't answer my question though - if it's still in warranty you really shouldn't be bothering to mess around with it yourself, you would get it fixed under warranty, doing things like flashing a vBIOS with break your warranty unless you flash it back to stock before you send it back.

I can't really help you anymore on this beyond what I've already said. But, if you find a vBIOS you want to flash, show me the link and we can discuss whether we think you should flash it or not - but beware the risk is your responsibility (not mine).

Hey, if you want to potentially brick your laptop or render the warranty void, then that's your choice, I'm not gonna stop you, but it's risky & not worth it, why keep hardware that's not even working properly at stock clocks. You have Alienware 15r3 with GTX 1070 right? Yes, they replace the motherboard as the GPU is soldered to the motherboard. If you have the same laptop model, then it could work, Alienware 15r3 with GTX 1070. But, it's an unnofficial vBIOS by the looks of it, and from what I read just now from the couple of people that tested it - there are 3 different vBIOS included and some are better than others, and some are panel specific (e.g. G-sync). It's up to you which one you choose, but it needs to be compatible, I can't really advise you any further, but if you have G-sync you'd want to flash a G-sync compatible vBIOS. You flash it at your own risk & if you're in warranty I suggest you get the problem sorted through the manufacturer (like I mentioned before). Good luck, and let us know how it goes out of curiosity.

EDIT: back up your own vBIOS that's currently on your GPU before you flash a new one - this will hopefully allow you to flash your original vBIOS if the new one doesn't work very well, but sometimes you can't always flash back the vBIOS, you can use GPUz to back up the vBIOS.

    Howdy!

    Is this a global issue?
    how can I test/force failure?

My mobo fried. I had Samsung mem chips, I SPECIFICALLY stated I wanted the same mobo with the samsung mem and NOT micron.... Guess which I one they sent?

Not extremely happy, though I haven't encountered any failure.... I'd rather not find out later that I should have hopped on this issue and had it out with dell.

Micron memory is not really about failure, it's just that sometimes it doesn't overclock as far as Samsung memory - generally because if you're not running an updated vBIOS then the frequency ramps up too fast for the voltage & it causes instability when overclocking past a certain point. If you have an updated vBIOS with the specific 'Micron Fix', then it's possible that you could overclock further. Crashes related to unstable Micron VRAM are often associated with green checkerboard patterns on the screen at point of failure/instability. I managed to overclock the VRAM on my GTX 1070 further after I flashed an updated vBIOS to it. It's not really a concern unless you're overclocking, and even then it only makes a small difference to how far you can overclock your VRAM.

Could you help me with a backup of your vBios? Exactly I occupy that one, since my AW came with that vBios precisely, and I have not been able to find one again. I would really appreciate it

The partnumbers are the same so they cannot decide beforehand which motherboard they ship out.

    Hi,

My computer is acting up where the video card stopped working after a bios update. My BIOS version does not show on GPU-Z like it shows on your screenshot here. I've researched and seems like i need to reflash the Video Bios manually using nvflash. Do you mind sharing a dump of your VBios so I can try fixing mine? If so, let me know if you need help dumping the VBios.

Hi, you haven't said anything about what card you want a vBIOS for. I'm assuming you're talking a GTX 1070 that has Micron memory based on the post you quoted. I've got a desktop GTX 1070 from Zotac, and I flashed my vBIOS with a vBIOS from here:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/5g8o36/vbios_update_to_fix_micron_ram_issue_on_zotac_gtx/
This is a fix for the Micron overclocking issue, and I can confirm it does allow higher VRAM overclock. I have flashed the ZOTAC GeForce® GTX 1070 AMP Edition version, because that's the card I have. I wouldn't really recommend flashing them from that link unless you have a Zotac card, although I've heard some people flashing their cards with a vBIOS not specifically designed for their individual card and have had some sucess, but I can't testify to that.

The GTX 1070 I have is the one inside my Alienware 17R4. My forums scouring looking for answers and led me to believe that the desktop VBios won't work on this one as these are 1070 mobile version. Also i found that the Alienware VBios is universal for whatever brand of GDDR5 memory (Micro, Samsung, etc.).

The requirements for the VBios that'll work for me are GTX 1070 from 17R4/15R3 and 17R5/15R4 as long as they are non-gsync versions. If you or anyone can please help with a VBios dump I'll be forever grateful.

Thanks for your time and your willingness to help.

Thank you man!!! Your help is greatly appreciated.

I managed to get the card back working using one of these VBIOS.

However, as a note in case this happens to someone else again, the issue was not really the VBios or the card itself, the issue was more with the I/D GFX switch that is the special function on the F7 key. I had it in Optimus mode and the Nvidia Card never worked. I switched to the other mode (discrete card only) and it started working right back up. After I switched back to optimus mode and it also worked. So I guess if someone has issues with their card saying that "windows stopped because it reported problems" just switch the modes and it may start working again.
