Would you recommend a refurbished M4400?

I'm weighing my options as I decide which notebook to go with. I really like the M4400 but it's a bit pricey (even with the sale going on now and the free screen), so I was wondering if a refurb is something to consider. What would the warranty be like? How is it different from getting a new one besides not getting any papers/cd's, etc.? Would you trust getting a refurb from Dell?

I got a refurbished machine several years ago, and it worked very well. The warranty I purchased was good for 3 years, even though the machine I bought was out of production.

I have seen it go the other route as well, in which I purchased a refurb that had issues from day one. Returned it for another. (Just watch if you have returns, as they don't like to credit your returns too quickly.)

What were the brands of these machines? Both Dells? I'm currently on a refurbed Toshiba I got from Overstock.com. It's worked fine but I think I got "lucky" in that the screen had two dead pixels and was most likely the reason someone returned it and not some serious hardware issue. I'm not sure how Dell's quality control is, though, for refurbs...

Warranty is exactly the same as on a new one; buy without hesitation.

If you dont like it, you can anyway return it (without restocking fees I believe).

Functionally, the refurb'd laptops are supposed to be exactly as new ones.

I'm postive Dell's quality control for refurbs are exactly as that for new ones. Otherwise, they would not offer the same warranties as new ones. As far as I know, other brands offer crippled warranties on refurb laptops (eg 3 months, 6 months). Dell offers full waranties, eg., for the M4400 I believe 3 year onsite is standard. Surely, if the laptops were problematic, it would not be in Dell's interests to keep servicing the laptops.

If you buy from Dell, you get a three-year warranty. Usually the Outlet machines are in quite good shape if you get them refurbished or previously ordered new. Just avoid scratch and dent. If you've got minor problems like stuck pixels, I'm pretty sure they'll fix it at no cost; if you've got major problems, I'm pretty sure they'll replace it at no cost.

While I wouldn't necessarily recommend an M4400 per se, I would recommend buying from the Outlet.

I bought a refurbished m4400 from the Dell outlet that had some serious issues. When I called them for the first time about this, they immediately told me they would order me a new one with the same exact specks! This is why I continue to buy from Dell. Their warranty is second to none!!

I would highly recommend buying from the Dell Outlet.

DELL ALL THE WAY ! There warranty is the best.
This will be my Fifth Notebook from DELL.
I have developed a good relationship with them over the year, for me switching to another brand would be a risk. I couldn't do it.
I feel much more safer and secure and worry free, especially if you take the Complete Care Warranty form DELL.
So all in all if you have the CASH to buy warranties than your covered for almost anything from DELL, once your in there, there is no coming back :)

For the precisions, the three year onsite warranty is included.

That's good to hear. Tim Konuch, thank you for that input. That's some major toutage of Dell. :) Makes me feel confident in them.

Commander Wolf, why wouldn't you recommend the m4400? I was looking for something under 6lbs that has a decent video card and under 16". Did I mention I don't want it to look like a tacky piece of plastic? :p
