After recieving my new vostro and reformatting with windows xp, I can no longer seem to work my integrated webcam mic without first having to go into the sound options and set xp to use the internal mic, is there any tweak in the registry or anywhere else to change the default mic in windows xp to the internal mic rather than the external one? thanks!

The obvious question - did you install all of the correct Vostro XP drivers from Dell, including the notebook system software (if applicable)?
