..I just installed Windows 7 (64bit) on my M6400, and I got pretty much everything running (even my old 5505 mobile broadband that I migrated from my D820...)

However, my SD card reader is no longer working. THere aren't any unknown devices in device manager - so I am guessing that it has loaded a MS driver but it isn't doing the job properly.

Has anyone else come across this?

I had only one small driver problem with the 64bit Windows 7 that I didn't have with the 32bit version. The 32bit 7 found and installed all drivers itself with no input by me at all. Pretty cool. But with the 64bit version of the same OS (RTM) 7 the system didn't even recognize the FX3700 card and I couldn't even download it from the Dell page in Windows 7 but logged back onto XP, downloaded the driver there with no problem and shoved it down the 64bit versions throat. No shoving involved actually, the driver installed as normal and the Nvidia card showed up on Device Manager. I've no idea why or how it happened but my SD card reader works fine in XP, Windows 7 32 & 64bit and for a while Vista with no problems. I wonder if you run 7 in the XP mode if your card reader would work again. It was working before you installed 7, right? With what OS? And when you put a card in it the computer just does nothing? No beeps, bings or dings? I've got two versions of Windows 7 and XP Pro as the boot OS and so far everything gets along fine and if it was working before it's gotta be a driver or maybe check the BIOS, I know there's a page for turning on or off all the different ports and connections including the SD reader if I'm remembering it right. If it worked before it's gotta be real simple and that's the two things I'd check. But I'm an idiot lots of times too.

I was previously using Vista x64 and it worked fine - in fact when I restore the disk image for that - all is well.

With Windows 7, x64 then the drive just isn't there.

No - it made no difference.
Hmmm...I will reimage to vista and compare the device manager items and see what is different.

    works fine here?
try closing explorer/my computer then eject the card, reinsert the card and then open my computer.
i did notice if you eject the card when my computer is open then reinsert the card it wasn't showing up!
was ok if i close and reopen my computer though.
sounds like the driver is not detecting when there is a card in the reader properly?

    my device manager..........

    Finally got it working.
I put the M6400 to sleep...removed the card and then woke it up. Then inserted the card.
And now it just works fine - all very odd...

But many thanks for your time folks!

I had tried every permutation (power on/off, hibernate etc) with the card in and out - but to no joy, but like I said, it is now working just fine.

On that note - I am finally getting used to Win7 - I've managed to get back the classic menu and the quick launch bar and even got Virtual server running on it - so it is all good. Hurrah!
    :)
