I left my E6400 in my backpack and I guess it didn't go to sleep or it woke up. Anyways, it got hot (and the battery ran down). It seems OK. Has anybody ever had problems with heat damage to their LCD from a similar circumstance?

I mean, I'm sure if you heat it enough, you'll start to damage your LCD, but I don't think these kinds of situations will create enough heat to warrant concern. I've had this sort of thing happen to me twice in the past two years on two laptops, and both are still fine. If the LCD looks fine... it probably is.
