    Hey all,

I'm getting a Dell D630 for grad school and have the whole thing configured save for the wireless card. Dell offers the following options:

    Dell Wireless™ 1490 802.11a/g Dual-band Mini Card
    Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Dual-Band Mini Card
    Dell Wireless™ 1505 Draft 802.11n Mini Card
    Intel® 4965 802.11a/g/n Dual-Band Mini Card
    Dell Wireless™ 1395 802.11g Mini Card

With 802.11n being the standard du jour, I think I can reasonably eliminate everything but the Dell 1505 and the Intel 4965. Now I'm having a hard time deciding between those two. I've read that the Intel 4965 has had some issues with connectivity when very close to a wireless router. I'm unaware of any specific issues with the Dell 1505 but that's not to say there aren't any.

Can anybody give me a good reason to go for the Intel 4965 over the Dell 1505 or vice-versa? Also can you guys tell me what 1505 Draft means? It seems to imply that it's not a fully 802.11n compliant card.

    Cheers,
    DW

I've not any problems with the 4965 and a linksys wrt54gl WAP. The 4965 is a good card. Never tried it in 802.11n mode though.

I used to have a Latitude D610, and it was no end of problems with the built-in Dell card. Thats why I have the Intel card on my D830, and I couldn't be happier with it.

i would recommend getting intel. I've only heard bad things about the dell wireless cards. and plus, its only a couple more dollars. Go with. Intel® 4965 802.11a/g/n Dual-Band Mini Card if you want wireless n

They've improved. The thing is, Intel driver support is much better than Dells simply because its obviously the more encompassing company. Since the code in each is different, there are occasionally some things that the Intel Driver covers that the Dell doesnt.

Im looking at the configurations and they seem to only have the intel 3945 wireless card. Or is this the same thing as the 4965 one. If they are not, then is the 4965 one better is some way? Why did dell opt to take out the 4965 one then? Im also looking to get a D630.

the difference between the 3945 and 4965 is that 3945 is a/b/g while 4965 is a/b/g/n. But I have no clue why they took of the option for it.

4965 cards are a dime a dozen on eBay. $30-$40 and an hour of your time to install.

You could even wait, and probably use one of the new wireless cards from the Montevina chipset family if you wanted extra features. For instance, they might be embedding GPS functionality into the new wireless cards, which should work in your existing miniPCI-E slot.
