One of my relatives from Los Angeles is looking for a laptop and the Dell Vostro 1510 seems like a good deal. However, it is in the Small & Medium Business section of Dell's store and while he runs his own shop, I don't know if that qualifies as a small business. Does anyone know what, if anything, Dell asks for when you try to buy one of these? Or is this split between Home and Business just for marketing purposes and anyone can buy the Vostros?

They don't require anything except a business name. Since he runs his own shop, he can just type in his shop's name and he's good to go. Just entering his name for his business name is fine also AFAIK

For vostro laptops no business name is required. When I bought a 1500 for my boss they didn't require any business information to make the purchase, and my 1700 was purchased through my personal account.

When I tried to order a latitude a year and a half ago I was required to give a Tax ID number for the business I was buying for.

Hmm that's weird, but then again vostros are geared more towards home and small business with under 10 employees. Basically Dell refers to Latitude as "Corporate class" while vostros are just SOHO.

Did you select the "tax exempt status" option?

Agree, when I bought mine around that time, all I had to do is enter my name as the business name...

No, I was ordering over the phone. I may have been using a business credit card, perhaps that had something to do with it. unfortunately I don't remember very well.
