Seems that I did something wrong with driver install. I'm just not sure where.

I ran HDTune and got 24.6% CPU usage with the WD1600BEVT-75ZCT0 (160gb, 5400rpm). Aside from that, the HD Tune results were on par with or better than John Ratsey's.

There must be some type of driver issue here. I googled and found a m1330 review which used the same HD and had a CPU usage of 5%.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Checkout Task Manager and Resource Monitor for which process is consuming loads of resources.

Also, try terminating as many User Processes in tskmgr as possible. Then run HD Tune

Doesn't HD Tune only measure the CPU usage of the hard drive itself?

Yes, but there are some background processes using the HDD causing the high CPU usage in the benchmark. The HDD is in DMA mode, so CPU usage for the HDD should be null.

Well, I just booted in safe mode and ran it, and got 1.5%.

Hmm. lol. Time to figure out what is using my CPU up...
