I was told by Dell that the Vostro didn't support 64-bit addressing. What's not clear to me is if that means the hardware doesn't support it, or just that they don't sell it with a 64-bit OS, or whether if you put your own Vista64 on it the Dell drivers would not work, or what.

Can a vostro owner confirm whether or not it runs 64-bit and can address more than 4 gigs of RAM?

    Thanks!

Which Vostro model with which CPU?

edit: all of the Vostro notebooks that I see on the current Dell USA website are capable of running a 64-bit OS.
However, Dell does not appear to offer 64-bit drivers for their Vostro notebooks.

Probably the 1710 and one of the higher processors like the T8100. But it's all a no-go if I can't address more than 4gig of RAM.

    Thanks.

Well, you can install Vista 64-bit, but Dell's support website doesn't appear to supply 64-bit drivers, which you need for full functionality of the computer. So, I guess you're out of luck with the Vostro 1710 unless you're up for a hell of a lot of driver searching.

    hi there

i recently upgraded the vista 32bit to 64bit on my vostro 1510 and here are my experiences:

with the majority of the drivers, such as chipset, video, audio etc, the packages in fact already have the x64 version of the drivers already there. so take a look in the dell driver folders for anything pointing towards a 64bit version.

the majority of drivers are widely available directly from the manufacturers.

the only issues i had was the quickset software (of which the latitude d630 quickset install works) and the alps trackpad drivers, which i found through a little searching (if your looking for it then post up and i'll hunt down the link and post it up for ya)
