I have a Vostro 1500, which I bought 10 months ago. About 3 months ago the screen became loose and wobbled about 10 degrees when computer was moved or if I was on the train and it went over bumps. I tightened the screws as advised but this did not have any real effect. Dell engineer came and replaced the back cover with new hinges, (as they though hinges may be broken/at fault but they were fine,) but some wobble was still noticable so he ordered a new base. He came today and took the screen out complete with all the screen casing out of the old base, and put it into the new base, but still wobbled, so just put it back in the old base as it wouldn't have cured the problem.

Now yesterday, after he put the new back cover on, he had to take the plastic around the front of the screen off. After he put it together I noticed that the screen is no longer flush with the plastic surround and it annoys me! Am I just being finicky/picky or should I ask them to fix it?

I can totally relate to you getting annoyed by something like that.

I'd request to get it fixed, but politely of course. If the wobble was 100% fixed though, that would be a different story. It isn't though.

Thought I'd put up with it but wobble has not worse. TheI'm going to request a replacement notebook or that they extend my warranty for FREE for 1 year just in case the problem gets worse. I will ask to keep the exisiting HDD so I can put it into the new notebook. I now have only about 2 weeks of warranty remaining. How likely is it that they will give me a replacement notebook or extend my warranty ??

The possibility of replacement would depend on the ability (or inability) to fix the problem. Dell might first want to make another attempt to replace some of the parts. You could reasonably request a warranty extension in respect of any repairs so that there is enough time to be confident that the fix is permanent.

Speak nicely to Dell and, if necessary, ask for your case to be escalated (ie passed to someone higher up the system).

Spoke to CS and they are going to try to repair it again. Mentioned the plastic around the screen is loose from last "repair" attempt. Said she'll get some plastic sent out too. Hopefully, I'll have a non wobbly, flush plastic LCD screen...

Does the Vostro 1510 have the same problem? I hope not because a new Vostro 1510 is being shipped to me in a few weeks.

It affects quite a few Dell's. Other people that have the 1500 have complained about it, and also common problem for Latitude owners. Think it is quite common in other laptops too as the screw holding the hinges become loose over time. However, I didn't think that this being a business class notebook should suffer from this defect so early in its life. It started wobbling/becoming loose around 6 months of ownership.

Will update the thread as it's sorted/not sorted
