    Hello,

My Vostro has 2GB of memory it is a 2x1GB setup, 1GB on the top side beneath the keyboard, the other 1GB is installed on the back side. My question is, Is it ok for me to replace the 1GB memory on the backside with a 2GB memory? Will this create compatibility issue? Or should I just replace the one beneath the keyboard. Thanks.

It doesn't matter which module you change. Accessing the module installed at the back-side will obviously be easier, so change that. It has nothing to do with memory compatibility, but best to keep the memory specs the same. You can checkout the current memory specs using CPU-Z.

Cool, thanks guys. I got the Cosair ddr2 pc5300 with the same timings as the one installed in my laptop.

I do have one more question, this is a single channel setup. If I install 2x2GB in my system and I am using 32bit OS, does the system running on dual channel but only recognizes 3.2 GB of memory?

Yes. Dual-Channel is a H/W feature, and has nothing to do with the 32-bit limitation.

There's a chance it may even recognize more than 3.2. My Vostro 1500 recognized 3.75 in XP
