I see lots of threads asking if it's possible to upgrade the 3550's screen from 1366x768 to 1600x900. And lots of replies saying not possible.

But has anybody actually tried it? I'm aware a 1080p screen probably wouldn't work but 900p is definitely worth at least trying. I've had similar instances with screen upgrades where people straight off the bat say "not possible" but it has worked.

Same general rules apply as with the Vostro 3560 upgrade. And if 900p works, so does 1080p as these use the same cable type.

The 3560, however, had 1-channel and 2-channel lcd's from the start, so they made two cable versions as well. This doesn't seem to apply to the 3550. If not; you need to find the right cable with sufficient length (not an issue) and these optional pins need to be wired on the motherboard. The HD 3000 would support the higher resolutions just fine, but its additional signals need to go somewhere (besides the vga/hdmi ports).

Best way to find out is to attach a 900p or 1080p lcd from another system (size is irrelevant). It just need to be 40pin lvds (quite common) and you can use the lcd cable that came with it. If you don't have one, you might even simply look on the motherboard, these are the 8 pins in question (the connector should be labeled with a "1" and "40" on the pcb proper):
