I need to upgrade a Vostro 3550 from it's existing 2GB because it's running Windows 7 - 64 bit and is woefully slow.

So I ran the Crucial Memory finder on it and it came up with three choices for an 8GB (4GBx2) kit from Crucial.

    CT2294560 - $57.99
    CT3305052 - $55.99
    CT3433125 - $63.99

Does anyone know what the difference between the three is likely to be? Do I even need 8GB or will removing one of the 1GB sticks and replacing it with a 4GB stick be sufficient for general web surfing, email and word document editing?

You'll have to look at the specs: frequency/timings, that's likely the price difference.

If I were you, I'd go for 8 GB, but you don't have to go for the fastest RAM out there either.

Thanks, 8GB ordered. The $63.99 one is slightly faster. I went with slightly slower (1600MT/S vs. 1866 MT/S) and cheaper kit.
