I have a Vostro 3400 running 32bit Windows 7 with a Dell 1501 wireless card. The wireless connection randomly stops requiring me to use Windows repair to get it functioning again.

I have the latest version of the driver installed and the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power unchecked.

Does anyone know what is happening and how to fix it?

Change your plan settings to max performance for the wireless card under battery power and AC power

Thanks. That appears to have solved the problem except for the fact that wireless doesn't always automatically connect when turning on or un-sleeping even though the connection is set to automatically connect.

change it so that windows cannot power down the device, that might resolve the rest of the issue.

    Thanks for the suggestions yeuemmaimai

Upon further investigation Window was showing a problem with Realtek PCIe GBE family controller driver (Yellow triangle with an exclamantion point) so I reinstalled it. Hopefully that will fix the issue. If not I will turn off the ability for Windows to power down wireless.

    Hi akadoublej,

You may also try changing some of the settings in the Device Driver properties in order to get better performance from the Dell 1501 wireless card. Please select the ‘Advanced’ tab in the device properties to check and confirm the following.

    • IBSS mode is set to: 802.11a/b/g/n.
    • Wake-up Mode is set as: All.
    • Minimum Power Consumption: Disabled.
    • Roam Tendency: Aggressive.
    • Try updating the driver by going to the Driver tab of the Device Driver properties and click on Update Driver.

I hope you find this information useful.

    Thanks & Regards,

Thanks. I have made all these changes. The problem I have now is that sometimes the wireless doesn't connect on bootup. If I try to manually connect it fails.

It's only sometimes and rebooting once or twice usually fixes the problem. It's as if sometimes a process is not starting up properly and simply by rebooting, the process then starts correctly.

    Does this make any sense?

    Hi,

As suggested by ‘yeuemmaimai’ you may try another card. Before that you may also try clearing the “startup”. If you have any Dell Wireless application or Intel wireless utility in the startup program list, please ensure that they are “checked’ along with the antivirus program. You can uncheck other programs: by doing so the system will boot up faster. Additionally, as the number of programs is less in the startup; the wireless utility will initialize faster and the chance for the wireless to get connected is higher.

Please use the below mentioned link to view the information about how to clear the startup programs. Refer to the same if required.

Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program

I hope this helps. Please do let us know the update.

    Thanks & Regards

I don't have another card to test with. I did reduce the number of start up items but still occasionally experience the problem. Usually click on the 'windows repair' (I forget the exact name) resets the wireless card and then it's fine until the next time.
