Was the 9400m GPU known to failure? I know there are other Nvidia GPU's especially in the XPS 13 and XPS 15 (8600m GT) that were known to fail after a couple of years.

If the 9400m GS is also a problem GPU, would applying thermal paste to the thermal pad on the GPU help? :hi2:

Also is there a speedfan utility for this laptop?

If it's a rebrand of an 8-Series GPU it might be afflicted. I wouldn't take my chances. If it is a bad chip, there is basically nothing you can do to prevent it from dying; it will go eventually. Applying thermal paste to the thermal pad definitely won't do anything; in fact it might make it worse. A properly done copper mod might make it last a little longer, but as I said, it won't fix anything. I don't think i8kfangui will work on the 1520, but SpeedFan itself might.

    Thanks Commander

p.s. My mistake it's a 9300m GS and yes it's a rebranded 8 series GPU. Would a laptop cooler help? It won't be used for gaming.

Like I said, it might prolong the lifespan for a little, but it won't fix anything. Even if you're not gaming, the GPUs are basically just as likely to crap out.
