So the other day I was streaming a video when the computer froze with some artifacts on the screen and sound stuttering.

I did a forced shut down, but when I tried to start up nothing displays on the screen. The screen turns on, just nothing is displaying. I have tried an external monitor but that does not work as well. The external monitor displays "No signal"

What I find weird is that after I attempt to start up the computer the hard drive spins and led lights turning on. 10 or so seconds later it sounds as if the computer shuts down. I here no noise and all lights turn off except for the LED light indicating power and screen remains on. I have use the power button to have that light and screen turn off. I usually here some noise when I use the power button to shut down, but this time there is no noise -just silence.

I am not very computer hardware savvy, so I can't properly diagnose the problem but obviously it seems like the video card is having issues or is dead (8600m GT) in all likelihood due to heat. I am trying to figure out if this is solely a GPU issue (and possibly fan issue) or could it be something else such as motherboard.
If it is the motherboard or a number of factors I might as well dump the computer. If it is just the GPU and/or fan I can replace the parts myself.

    Thanks for your time.

You are probably one of the rare Vostro 1500 GPU failures, as you suspected. Luckily, the GPU is replaceable, and replacement parts are very cheap.

    Thanks for replying.

I was able to take apart the notebook today, but not without any difficulties. I had to deal with a shredded screw beneath the laptop which I used a drill break it. Trouble is, my dad got the "bright" (sarcasm) idea of trying to bang in the screwdriver into the screw to try to create some grip. The shredded screw just so happened to go through the edge of the motherboard on its way to connect to the palm rest.

So once I got the top off and was able to access the motherboard I tried to power and I started to get beep codes. So unless this is normal, I am guessing my motherboard is gone.

    yeah figured as much

for what it is worth when I plug it in (with video card attached) it starts beeping. If I try it without the video card it seems like the computer shuts off (LED for power turns off)

Sorry for not helping and thread hijacking ..

I also have a fried GPU vostro 1500, mine actually able to turn on and use it igpu?I believe (running it using external monitor with dgpu disabled, laptop screen all white when turn on) it can display 800*600/1024*768/1600*900 but all three with yellow/purple vertical lines.. would getting a replacement gpu fix it?[may actually can use it for 1.0x4 egpu .., but irrc the 1500 model was premature eol cause it have some defect and they released the 1510?)

for the OP, Does led blink once then whole thing off? Did you remove/reassemble the cpu heatsink?

So I ordered new parts (motherboard, gpu, fan)

I never dealed with thermal paste so I am wondering what I should do with the hardened paste on the cpu heat sink

I cleaned out the center area (using isopropyl), but do I need to do that outer square area as well? If so, it is pretty tough. Any recommendations as to how to remove it?

Also, I don't plan to replace the thermal pad. Can I dab it with the isopropyl to clean it?

It's not running on integrated graphics. It's basically just hobbling along on the bad dGPU. Just buy another card; they are cheap and plentiful.

Scrape off the old stuff with a hobby knife and put some new paste there. I don't know if it's good practice to clean the pad - I usually just let it be.
