I have a vostro1500 with the highest bios update available which is V06. Since the inspiron 1520 has th same motherboard as the vostro 1500 can i use it's bios update? The inspiron 1520 is at V09 and i think it supports more ram than vostro's V06. Does anyone have any ideas on the pro's and con's of doing this?

for one, the BIOS flasher utility wont let you.

And if you extracted the BIOS from the installer and manually flashed it, you would probably destroy your system.

Just because the Inspiron 1520/Vostro 1500 are the same laptop does not mean its motherboards are the same!

ok i'm not going to say every vostro1500/inspiron1520 has the same motherboard. they do use two differant style motherboards, a discret and a uma board. the noticeable differance is that the discret board has a seperate video card where the uma is intergrated graphics. as for the uma board goes i don't know if it's the same board between the two computers but the discrete board is the exact same board in boath computers. now if you notice there is only one bios vers for each computer. the vostro is ver06 and the inspiron is ver09. ok with the two shareing the exact same discret motherboards then why wouldn't the bios flash work? other than having the wrong name on the bootup screen it should work.

They are the same hardware but the Vostro series came a little later so have different numbers for the same BIOS. The latest BIOS is the same for both but the 1520 started a couple of versions before and so the designations are different. So say the Inspiron is on A03 when the identical Vostro is released - the same BIOS on the Vostro is given A01 so the same BIOS has a different number.

i heard that the inspiron 1520 with ver09 bios will recognize 8gb of ram even thou dell only claims 4gb. the vostro bios ver06 only recognizes 4gb. i also see that dell has more drivers for the inspiron on there site.

Well they are identical in everything but colour of the chassis so I see no reason for any difference.
