Dell is sending me a new unit as replacement to my faulty Dell 1400.
I had the = discrete nvidia graphics option along with the upgraded Dell screen (wxga+).

My question is this? Which will they send? They say it will be comparable. How can it be comparable if they dont even make a 14.1" vostro anymore? I don't want a 15" clunker because the reason i got the 14" was because of portibility.

I also dont wanna get stuck with onboard intel crap graphics, will they give me discrete video card?

    Will they upgrade the screen?

Also, I still have a few months left on original extended warranty, will I be able to purchase warranty for the new laptop they give me.

I get a feeling I might get stiffed here, has dell been pretty decent when they say comparable?

    Thanks guys.

Dell normally gives you some sort of an upgrade when your system gets replaced.

Since you originally had dedicated graphics you should get dedicated graphics. If not, I would complain once you get it.

If I had to guess, they would probably give you the Vostro 1320 since they wouldn't give you something heavier but lighter. But then again this is only a guess.

    Good luck on your replacement.

hmmm. Would have liked it stay 14.1" as I felt it was the perfect balance between a 15" and a 13". Not too big, not too small.
I have a 13" Mac Book, which I feel is good, for what it is. But I did like the 14.1" wxga+ screen on my vostro 1400 and can't really imagine it with a 13.3" screen.

We shall see. What I was looking for was someone who's gone thorugh this recently and what they got.

THanks though Compsavy for your input.

Does the Dell Outlet have any Vostro 1400's in stock? Because they can send you refurbished computers, and if there is a refurb to be hand they'll pull it from the Outlet.

I had this happen to me.

I too had a Vostro 1400 and they replaced it last year with a Vostro 1510.

I would emphasise that you want dedicated graphics and a 14.1" WXGA+ display and see if Dell will find a suitable E6400. The E5400 offers the WXGA+ but not the dedicated GPU. This could be a compromise. The Intel GM45 may not be as bad as you think (are you needing good 3D graphics?).

    So here's the dilio.

They are sending me a Vostro 1520. I'm not happy about that.

    1) I originally bought a 14" because of it's portability. If I wanted a 15", I would have bought one back then.

    2) I paid a higher price for the 1400 then the 1500 was available for. because the portability in itself has a premium. Again, If I wanted a 15" I would have bought it from the begining.

    3) It has a regular WXGA screen, I have a WXGA+ on my Vostro, which I paid EXTRA for so I do expect it to atleast have an upgraded screen which is a moot point anyways since I don't even want a 15".

I'm not exactly sure how the 9300M compares with my current 8400GS because the 9300 has half the pipelines but twice the shader speed. So on paper they look about equal cards. I'll have to look at some reviews. But I'm not gonna be too picky on this one. Dedicated is dedicated, as long as I don't get the crap intel graphics. (I use my notebook with my HDTV at 1080P and stream 1080P content).

I don't want to sound ungrateful here because I'm pretty much getting a new system but if it doesn't meet my needs then what am I to do? I mean yes they probably thought I'd be happy with a "bigger" screen but really I'm expecting a same size machine as hauling it around all day is much easier.

What recourse do I have here?

it sounds to me you are getting royally screwed. Just call Dell and tell them. Eventually offer to pay a bit extra to get a new system.

is the vostro line supposed to be better than the latitutude? from your description i would ask for a e6400
