I've been thinking of installing some AS5 in hopes of bringing some of my laptop temps down - my GPU gets up to 93C and it kind of bugs me - even though the laptop itself doesn't get that hot.

Where can I apply the AS5 to help w/ heat?

You need to do the copper mod because the gap between the gpu and heatsink will be to big.

Makes me wonder..what if it improved the temp enough to make the fan shut up. I love this laptop except there is always some air/fan noise.

That noise you speak of may actually be the hard drive, my Vostro 1400's Toshiba 160GB has always sounded like air going through something when its spinning. I've confirmed that by turning off the fan for a while using i8kfan.

Sorry for taking the topic in a diff direction - but have you had success with i8kfan with the 1400 in controlling the fan while still maintaining temperature?

"Maintaining temperature"? With the general goal of lowering the fan speed, I don't think lowering the speed with any program is going to maintain a temperature. Not having a problem with the default fan control, I didn't use i8kfan very much, I honestly don't like the program at all. SpeedFan is utterly and completely superior to it, if only it would work on Dell computers.
