Just received the 1310 a few days ago. 2 annoying things ave crept up.

    1. Fan is on pretty much all the time, with the power source plugged in or not.

    2. When I pick up the notebook and move it while it's on, a strange sound comes from underneath the keybaord. It actually sounds like a light saber! The faster your move the notebook, the louder the strange sound. Would this be the fan or the harddrive not being balanced?

Any one else experience the above?

i have a vostro 1310 great notebook i don't get this "light saber" sound when i move it around and as for the fan i can only hear it when i am gaming and when it needs to release heat during idling times which is like every 6-7 mins for like 5-10 seconds

in your case i would call and ask dell what is up

How many fans are in the 1310? Reason I ask is that I noticed the fan like sound but the one on the bottom left of the unit is no even spinning and the fan sound is audible. I am not sure there is another fan unit inside as I don't feel any vent air coming from the notebook. Perhaps this sound is the harddrive? It does sound like the PVR when the unit is off and the harddrive spins.

As far as the light saber sound, it does seem ridiculous but that is the best description I have for it. In a quiet room, when the unit is moved around, even rotation causes the sound. It's pretty cool but I am not sure it's normal. What could be causing this sound?

Would you mind trying to hear the fan-like sound and light saber sound in a quiet room? I would appreciate it.

Update: Just performed the same test with a Vostro 1400 (non-slot load). I was able to generate the same sound on this unit as the 1310 but only when a DVD was playing inside the drive. There was also a fan-like noise on the 1400 but it was way less audible. Barely audible unless you put your eye right next to the right side of the keyboard. Does this mean the fan-like sound in the 1310 is the harddrive? If so, how would we explain the light saber sound when the unit is rotated? Something doesn't seem balanced to me. Anyone else try this with your 1310?
