I've replaced a "dodgy" WD SATA 160 GB 5400 rpm hard drive with a new WD SATA 320 GB 7200 rpm and used ACRONIS 2013 to copy a mirror image of the old HD on the new HD.

Everything works except only 149 GB of the new HD is recognised. This doesn't matter to me as this is more than enough for my needs but I'm curious to know why this is. Is it an unchangeable function of the Vostro 1310 BIOS, or some other part of the system, and can it be changed?

Thank you, in advance, for any help.

Does the drive show up as a 160GB drive in BIOS as well? I think you probably missed the setting in Acronis that tells it to expand the image to fill the new drive...

I couldn't find any details about the HD in BIOS but using Disc Manager I found I have 298 GB on Disc O, of which 149 GB NTFS have been allocated to Disc C: and 149 GB are unallocated, so it looks like your conclusion is spot on.

    Thank you for your help.
