    Hey there,

    I re-install Windows 7 on my girlfriends Dell Vostro 1015 (I installed Windows 7 Pro x64). I downloaded the latest drivers from the Dell Drivers FTP and installedd them. I believe some of those drivers got updated by windows update e.g. chipset. I just re-installed the chipset driver and got notified that version 9.x.x.x was installed (the driver from the dell website is 8.x.x.x). Both drivers cause the same problem:

    The fan is always running and I believe it is the max speed. Even when not doing anything
    The fan is clean, the temperatures are normal.

    Temperatures according to fan speed:
    There isn't anything in the BIOS that relates to fan.. only Intel SpeedStep which is enabled.

    With the "I8KFANGUI" I wasn't able to change any fan speeds.
    With "speedfan" no fan is even listed. UPDATE: It is now listed but with "0 rpm" !
    With "fn+shift + 1,5,3,2,4" and then "fn + r" I get:

    I also tried to disable the "BIOS thermal controls" in order to let "speefan" control the thermals.. but I still get "0 rpm" in speedfan altough the fan is running loud.

    To me it seems like the system can't read the fan and because of that simply always runs it at max speed. Setting the fan speed with "speedfan" or "I8KFANGUI" hasn't been working for me so far.

    Any ideas? :/ Thanks !

    @edit:

    I just enabled the "dell options" in "speedfan" and now it displays and detects a fan and also more temperatures:

    So the fan seems to be detected but it says 0 rpm altough the fan is running really loud.

    The tachyo or its wire may be broken (usually blue or yellow). Try unplugging the fan and hook up another 4-pin fan to the connector or squeeze the wires a bit while it's running and see if the rpm report works again. Could also try HWiNFO with all options enabled (though chances are slim):

    Hmm tried with HWiNFO but not sure where to get any information about the fan? I have "thermal devices" which lists "type fan, status =ok" but thats it.

    The wire of the fan broken.. thats a good one.. altough it means to disamble the whole notebook again :( Will try that if I have a free day this week.
    I disambled the notebook today already but didn't remove the fan (only cleaned it and checked if there was any dirt + ran the laptop without all the plastic covers on to see if it would help).

    Any other suggestions though ? Thanks !
