The mouse buttons below the touch pad have stopped responding on my fiancee's Vostro 1000. I have checked the mouse settings in the control panel, but there doesn't seem to be anything to change. I even booted into Safe Mode and had the same issue. I am not certain that a rebuild will solve the issue since I am more convinced that it's a hardware issue.

Has anyone else run across this and how difficult would it be to repair this myself?

Is this system out of warranty? Here is the guide to getting at the trackpad to service it. You can call up Dell and see what part # you will need to buy if it is out of warranty. Or you could see how much they would charge to fix it. It sounds like a hardware issue to me too. Have you tried the latest drivers?
