Due to compatibility with my software I need to downgrade from Vista Business to XP pro.. I'm assuming that XP pro is compatible with my Vostro 1710. really hope so.. Do I have downgrade right because I have Vista Business? and Does anyone know if I can use an existing Windows XP Pro recovery CD and then authorise it over the phone transferring the licence in some way. Still getting my head round this so any help really appreciated..

You do have downgrade rights with your license and the driver support is there for the machine. Dell will suppoer either OS on that machine. I would try calling dell support and ask them the best way to downgrade. Most of the systems now can have hat selected as an option at the factory so you get Vista and XP disks in the box. Not sure if the one you have came with the machine or not.

i installed my retail copy of XP Pro onto my vostro 1310 just did a clean wipe then put the drivers from the dell website onto a flash drive and loaded them on, but i did need to use NLite to modify the CD and reburn it so it would support the intel storage controller/ raid controller since we got no floppy drives
