on my e6400 hibernate and sleep have lots of problems.

Hibernate take a really long time to shut down, twice as long as shut down. the first thing that happens is that the monitor shuts off and then hard drive works for a while

Sleep is even clunkier. turns off monitor, it takes a few minutes to complete, sometimes when i use the FN+F1 combo it comes back on, when I close the lid usually works, but sometimes it doesn't.

at times hibernate won't work and stops in the middle of it, forcing me to shut of the laptop. then on restart it freezes a couple of times on the desktop and earlier I even got the BSOD.

can anybody help? why these modes are so slow, especially sleep which is supposed to be quick.

the problem on wake-up is not consistent, the slowlyness is it.

Regarding hibernate, what it does is that it writes everything in your RAM to the hard drive and then fully powers off the computer.

So for how long it should take: lets see, your computer has 2GB of RAM; that is 2048MB, and say your hard drive can on average push 55MB/s then it should take 37 seconds at the very least. Usually longer than that, because other things happen too in the process.

So how long does it take for your computer to shutdown?

    2 things you can try:

Intel Matrix Storage Manager: Which version do you have? When I upgraded to 8.7.1007 I had very similar problems. I downgraded to the 8.2 series. I hear that the 8.8 series is ok but you have to get that from the INtel site.

2.) Have you updated your dell system software? They have incorporated some hotfixes for Vista. You can try that.

I used a stop watch. it took 1:50 seconds. I have tried only once, but other times I am sure it was well over 2 minutes. So I guess that should be normal.

The intel matrix storage, I have the 8.2.2

I am not sure what do you mean by dell system software, you mean DCP?
I don't use dcp, but you probably mean something else. I don't see it in the drivers list.

This looks to be the result of time taken to close down one or more processes which don't what to close quickly.

Windows (XP, not sure about Vista) has a registry entry WaitToKillAppTimeout which is set to 20s by default. You can reduce that value. However, it would be prudent to do a little research into what processes you have running before they get killed quickly.

sorry it's my fault, I should have been more clear. I meant to hibernate. I just wrote "shut down" because it actually shuts down.

My E6500 takes pathetically long to hibernate as well. That's with a clean install too.
