    thanks for the reply.

I ran the memory test in the BIOS and the extended system test, both passed on all points.

I always use my external mouse, a bluetooth one but i already tried a different mouse and also the trackpad..all give the same results.
I've updated my BIOS to A14 to see if that made a difference but it didn't.

If i open a window and click it goes non-responsive, when i minimize and maximize it again from the taskbar i can use the keyboard to select, navigate and execute whatever i want. This is also how i shut down and restart explorer in the task manager. I have to do this a couple of times and everything will function as usual.

The fact that it's spread across different OS installation definetly points towards hardware but fixing a hardware issue by restarting explorer 5 times?

Sadly i really can't spare the time to do a clean install from DVD and reinstall ALL my software. The system images i have have all my software + latest drivers (after testing them) installed. I normally load a system image every 1 1/2 - 2 months and update everything i'm sure of and then make a new image. I made an image of Win7 after installing it but i never updated that image with newer drivers or anything so i was still on my initial install when this all started too happen

edit: I can open icons on the desktop by mouse or enter right after booting, it's only after the first window has opened that this becomes impossible. I've also had the issue switch to the windows being responsive but the desktop and taskbar both going non-responsive. This happened twice in the close/restart explorer sequences i've been doing

I don't remember being this clueless about a computer issue before, lol....also can't find anything related on the net :(

I also had that two or three times with other people's computers, but it's the only situation where I've seen this. It had caused other problems some time later.

I'm pretty sure that the problem LPTP-LVR described is not caused by faulty RAM. Multiple things make me come to this conclusion.

I think i'll try a fresh Win7 install and start from there. If the issue remains i can always load one of the images i already have.

thanks for the suggestions so far and i'll post back with the results

First of all: this post is late because I couldn't post it for some time (NBR not accessible - 404).
I recently had a similar problem caused by a Razer Copperhead.
Turned out that one of the mouse buttons was set to change the mouse profile, which were stored on the mouse itself (no driver software required to change between profiles that had previously been created on any other computer). After pressing the button that was assigned to "switch to profile...", none of the icons on the Desktop were clickable until you "healed" it by pressing Ctrl and Alt once.

What I meant was to install the operating system only. No drivers that aren't neccessary, no applications that aren't absolutely neccessary.

    Very weird indeed.

    Ok guys

Ofcourse i'm not sure but this may very well turn out to be the stupidest issue in the history of this forum....i'm not even sure i wanna tell you.

Here's the thing. I did a fresh Win 7 install and all was like it was supposed to be. Except for the fact that the scroll button on my BT mouse wouldn't work but i knew that would be fixed by installing the WIDCOMM BT drivers from Dell. So that's what i did...and there it was again!! Exactly the same thing!!

So i thought; well at least i found the culprit. Uninstalled the WIDCOMM stuf and got another mouse....so there was something wrong with my BT mouse hmmm? Let's take a closer look, i have these two very handy back and forward buttons on my mouse under my right thumb  Hang on, what's this!?!? there seems to be something holding the fwd button pushed in?? BEHOOOOLD....A BREADCRUM!!!

    i'm ashamed.....very:eek:

reminds me of a intern i had who paniced because the cursor in word was all over the place so i went to have a look and kept laughing the rest of the day....she had the book she was typing from lying on the spacebar:D

    So yes.....it was indeed a hardware issue:rolleyes:

Depends... if it was a new breadcrumb, then it was a rather soft-ware issue.:D

That's not quite the weirdest I've seen... I can remember one guy who soldered a wire onto his mainboard to connect something on the front of it to something on the back of it... But please, don't ask me what it was... he explained it to me (somehow) but I can't remember because all I was thinking about was: "w.. w... ww.... WHAT?"

Edit: also reminds me of the endless stories of people living in fear of the police for quite a while because their computer told them that some application performed an "illegal operation". I have no doubt that this has truly happened at least once...
