I have a 2 month old outlet E6500, with the wxga+ led screen and nvidia graphics. I opened my laptop today- and the screen won't light! the laptop is running, the screen is on, but there's absoulotly no backlight. I searched the web, restarted, played with all possible light settings- anything I can think of. Does some one have a soulutin? please help!

Update- I ran a full nod32 virus checkup. Nothing found. It seems that the screen is completly off until windows starts, and then the screen turns on, but with no backlight. I'm not sure about this though. Help.

So can you see a feint image on the screen which shows that the computer is sending a signal to the screen? If not, do you have access to an external monitor to see if that displays a picture? If you are using an external display at the same time then perhaps you have used a setting which turns the internal display off. Fn+F8 may work through the combinations.

Somewhere, there should be a switch built into /near the hinges which will turn the display (maybe just the backlight) off when it is shut. Perhaps this switch is stuck.

Otherwise, I wonder if the power to the backlight has died. Possibly a connector problem (see the service manual) since the LED backlit displays don't have an inverter (the usual cause of backlight failure).

I do see a feint image, with no light. I had this problem for about a week, but when I hibernated/restarted and all kinds of other combinations, the screen came back to life. Now nothing works. This is sooo confusing! what can I do?

I can't think of anything other than what I have already suggested.

If anyone still has ideas- please share. In the meantime i'll use my trustworthy Cowon D2 to pass the time. Oh well.

My laptop just came back. Suprisingly, the Dell service was pretty good. They switched the whole screen... Hope I won't run into anymore problems!

It could have been that the display cable partially came out of the socket - that happened to me when I was replacing my display (I didn't put it in quite right), and all of a sudden, the backlight went out. But the display was, oddly, still working.
