    Hey guys!

I know that its pretty easy to upgrade the E6400. Just take off the back cover, and you have pretty much instant access to all components. My question, does it void the warranty I were to order a stick of RAM and a new HD and stick them into a new E6400 I were to buy? I know it should be pretty easy to do that.

I plan to get the E6400 with 1 stick of 2gigs built in, then upgrade with this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208407). That stick should work right? I was able to discern the DDR2-800 from the Dell Config... I'll also probably stuff in another hard drive at some later point.

    Thanks,
    Eric Huang

Upgrading ram doesn't void your warranty.
btw, I think you may have the wrong link in your post.

Just hang on to the original hard drive and RAM, just in case you need to ever send in the E6400.

It does not void your warranty so long as your upgrade does not damage the notebook.

    errr how do I put this ....it's not a Mac ! :)

upgrading your ram and/or hard drive won't void the Dell warranty unless you use a hammer to get the ram in there.

I hope no one would mind if I bump this thread because I'd like to upgrade a new E6400 of my own, and can't quite find any good thread with instructions for it.

I've found that the E6400, for RAM, uses Dual Channel DDR2 800MHZ. Does that mean that any DDR2 800 stick of RAM should fit in? Would this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227267 ? One of the reviews for it says that its "BIG, not a problem for me but others may want to make sure they have space before buying. These r easily 2x wider and 2x taller than any plain old stick of ram. and 4x heavier"

And in general, what are the good RAM companies, what are the best choices, what else should one keep in mind when upgrading RAM?

As for the HDD, I'm just plain confused because the Dell specs sheet for the E6400 doesn't specify the parameters. What should I be looking for in a hard drive to make sure it works well with this machine?

Sorry for what I'm sure are stupid questions, by the way--this will be my first time manually upgrading a laptop!
