I dunno, I typed in the part number and it popped right up.
(Actually I think I added "heatsink" to the query because I was getting a lot of power strips or something.)

Thanks Aaron44126, its always a pleasure to hear from you.

wss1995 has a point. There is a possibility of changes in the graphics card mounting holes/screws on the chassis as well to accommodate the new cards. Worst case, may have to order pertinent part of the chassis as well.

    if it helps anyone I upgraded a new'ish 7730 (had i7 & p3200) with a motherboard for 7740 with i9 and rtx 5000
works perfectly, the physical size of the 7740 motherboard is identical with that of 7730 and all cables/connections match as well....
only issue 2 holes in rtx card for heatsink are not matching the 7730 heatsink I have for p3200 but I modded something to work fine
my heatsink is nv-192 and I was wondering if nv-256 is better but I couldn't find the answer anywhere as I see others are installing rtx into 7730

this is good info for 77x0 owners. it implies that both the 7740 and 7730 chassis are fully compliant for upgrading to the RTX 4000/5000 and maybe future cards as well.

if i understand correctly, the 2 heatsink mounting holes not aligning are only to do with the heatsink and graphics card right and not the chassis? so a heatsink upgrade should solve it?

if will help FMs further if you could kindly share some pictures...

yes 2 screws for rtx card only and yes a new heatsink would be ok but I couldn't find one for 7740 and I looked at the difference between nv-192 and nv-256 for 7730 but I can't find why the 2 heatsinks models
not sure when I will have to time to disasembly it to take photos, I don't think I took any photos but I will check
I improvised and works fine, did a lot of testing and played latest tomb raider on max settings
I connected the laptop to 5 monitors and works fine (all its video ports and a dell usb c hub)

    actually 3 monitors + 1 tv + laptop's screen (I didn't have more available to add more)
1 monitor QHD, 2 full HD, 7730 screen full HD, tv 65" (or 70?) 4K resolution set. Photos below

I didn't even know I bought 7740 board as I wouldn't have risked it, the seller said 7730 i9 8th gen and P5200 card and I didn't even realise when installing the 7740 motherboard, I realised only when I noticed the screws issue for the RTX card, I then powered on the laptop as was part disasembled and noticed 7740 in bios :) I paid a bargain for 7740 board and RTX 5000 card on ebay (both new sealed in antistatic bag)

    thanks @steffxx

as happy as I am with my 7540... i think the Precision 7 series line is great hardware, being reinforced by the standardization and easy upgradability.

the minor negative reviews on throttling that i have seen around all seem misinformed. AFAIK any modern laptop, unless it is almost like a desktop in dimensions, will throttle at some point or the other. IMHO, the 7540 taken on heavy duty stuff pretty well.

the upgrades are icing on the cake...

could you share the source of purchase wss1995? i also need to order one.

as I see the screws are captive. so with this part everything seems in place for upgrading any discrete graphics card equipped 7540 to RTX 4000/5000.

I reached out to my local Dell rep. It took him several days to figure out the availability and the price. I would say your experience may vary, depending on where you are.

Yes, the captive screws are included, also true for the thermal pads and pre-applied thermal paste.
