I've had my dell m6400 for awhile now, and its been a great workhorse expect for that dang audio jack issue. Few weeks ago the backlight in my screen went out and now i'm looking to upgrade my screen from the CCFL to the RGB LED.

I'm looking at this screen: item 211670
Dell PRECISION M6400 replacement Laptop LCD Screen from $69.99 Brand-new screens (never used).

and then getting the RGB LED cable : RY89F from here
RY89F | Dell Precision M6500 17" RGB LED LCD Ribbon Cable

has anyone done this before with any success? is dimming still an issue?

All M6400's have LED screens, unless you're thinking of upgrading to an RGB LED screen, which some also have.

Anyone know if there is any compatibility issue with the LP171WU5-TLA4 screen vs the LP171WU5-TLA2 screen

Maybe try searching through the 2 old M6400 owner's thread. I'm sure it was there. Not sure if the cables are different (I guess both screens are 8-bit in which case I'd presume they are?), otherwise you'd need a new backplate cover and the display. You might even be lucky to find the whole display assembly on ebay (I've seen it for Covets).
