    Hi all,

I have upgraded my M4400 with a QX9300 processor...but all I get is BSOD on boot.

I can run the BIOS memory test without problems, and I can boot in safe mode. If I attempt a normal boot, I get a Blue Screen Of Death complaining that the BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant

Any ideas what is going wrong?

    Thanks,

    Henrik

HI, I just did the same thing. Went from a T9400 to a QX9300. Worked like a charm. Try to put back the T9400, boot, create a new HW Profile, shut down, put in the QX9300 adn boot from the new HW profile, the it should work fine. I didnt have to do this, but I know from earlier this might do it. Hope it helps.

You could try putting the T9400 in and starting up. Then go to device manager and right click each of the processor cores and click uninstall. The, turn off, switch CPUs, and try booting again. This might force your system into "installing" drivers for the CPU.
Also, is this a OEM or ES/QS CPU?

    Thanks guys,

I'll attempt uninstalling the T9400 cores when I get home. I wouldn't have thought this would make a difference, since when I booted in safe mode the processer shows up in device manager as 4 cores of Q9300

I'll update on progress after work tonight - in the mean time, any additional ideas are very welcome

    Cheers,

    Henrik

This is interesting stuff. Isn't there a problem that the thermal design is 35W for the T9400 vs 45W for the QX9300? I definitely want to do this going to try this as well.

    Sorry for being off-topic

    SOLVED :D

I finally got the QX9300 working in my M4400. As described above I went to the device manager and "uninstalled" the original CPU. Then I shut down the laptop, swapped the CPU and booted it up again

It took a few attempts (lesson learned: I had to "uninstall" both cores, it doesn't "uninstall" the whole CPU), but it finally booted up nicely. I've been running a few tests, reboots etc and it seems to be running fine now - but I'll keep an eye on it for a few days to ensure everything is as good it seems

Thanks to everyone that chipped in with their views/input

    Cheers,

    Henrik

PS. in terms of the thermal design question, the M4400 can (or at least could at some point) be purchased from Dell with the X9100 which is also a 45w CPU. That said, I have noticed a slight increase in fan activity and "exhaust temperature" from my M4400 - nothing that I would consider a problem at all

Glad I could help. I encountered a similar problem when installing my X9100, and someone recommended that to me.
It's kind of funny how you have to "uninstall" support for a part as essential as the CPU. But, I guess, that's the nature of Windows.

Cool. Do I understand it correct that you did this on a E6400? If so, don't you have problems with the different heat design 35/45W? Doesn't the new CPU dissipate considerably more heat ? On my E6400 with an undervolted CPU T9600 the fan sometimes drives me mad even under normal load say 20% (e.g. when the norton virusscan is being triggered)... I fear this will only get worse. What are your experiences?

    Thanks
