    Hi,

I have been using last three years a Dell Vostro 5470 notebook. Last month I lost its power adapter. I am looking for an universal adapter that I can use with my notebook. Original Dell adapter is a bit expensive to purchase from Dell in my country.

Its power cable port is 4.0*1.7mm if I am not wrong and I am looking for a universal adapter, I want it because this time I can use the adapter with different brand notebooks if I need.

Can you help me to choose correct universal adapter?

I can't recommend a specific brand but something to watch out for is that Dell normally use a centre pin on the DC plug for the BIOS to find the power rating from a chip in the adaptor. The better 3rd party adapters include this chip. If it is not present then the BIOS may throttle the performance to avoid the risk of overloading the PSU so it's not just a matter of finding the right DC plug. You may want to take your computer round a few computer stores to check if the BIOS is happy with any PSU you find.

Ow that was something I was not aware of. Thank you for that detailed information John. I will try a few stores, otherwise that information makes it important to get original adapter.

3rd party vendors have gotten so cheap on real Dell-branded ones (probably unopened corporate surplus, when sold as new) that I haven't bothered with aftermarket in ages. Non-US markets might be different, but Amazon US will ship internationally in many cases and should have them around US$20 for the 65W PA-12. The spread seems to be a bit bigger right now on the 90W PA-10, although it's still only around US$30.

As an aside, unless there is a difference between U-model and H-model E5470s, the E5470 uses the bigger 7.5mm plug (the older PA-10/PA-12 style) and not the new thinner 4.5mm. Certainly my quad-core H-model one uses the bigger plug.
