I've just had a look at device manager and noticed there's an exclamation mark next to the dvd drive, I havn't used the drive for about a week so I'm unsure when the problem occurred.
I uninstalled it from device manger after downloading the driver from dells website but when the app runs it says 'drive not found' so I'm unable to reinstall the driver.

I've ran a live linux cd which worked fine so it must be a windows thing?

I've also refitted the drive to make sure it hadn't come loose.

Dell Vostro 1500, XP Pro SP3.

    TIA. :)

I suggest that you uninstall the IDE channel which has current transfer mode of UDMA-2 (or slower), then redetect the hardware. This should flush out any problems relating to the interface.

My guess is this has something do do with magiciso/daemon tools.

I uninstalled magiciso the other week I remembered so possible that which made my dvd drive disappear from my computer.
I've now also uninstalled daemon tools, yesterday, and noticed that the dvd rw drive is showing as 'dvd ram drive' although it still plays dvds fine is there a way to getting it back to saying 'dvd r/w'?

DVD-RAM is an extra capability which is not listed here. However, this report from Nero InfoTool:

(taken from this thread) suggests that the burner does support DVD-RAM.
