I have a Vostro 1320 and my touchpad has decided to stop working in Windows 7 (particularly RC x64). The touchpad works fine in safe mode but does not work nine times out of ten when booting regularly in Windows.

In Device Manager, the touchpad has an exclamation point and the error "This device cannot start. Code 10". I tried re-installing the driver provided by Dell and also the reference driver directly from the Synaptics website and neither fixed the issue.

Doing a little research online, I found that several individuals had similar issues with other Vostros:

Has anyone here expereinced this issue? Any fix/workaround available? I use a seperate Bluetooth mouse anyway but the problem is annoying me nonetheless...

    Thanks.

As a test, I installed Windows XP Pro SP3 and have had no issues with the laptop at all. No issues with the touchpad or anything else for that matter.

I honestly believe the problem was a compatibility issue; although I no longer have Win 7 installed (it was the RC anyway), I now have the stability of Windows XP x86.

Maybe it was just the RC build? Try the 7600 RTM build - even if it's just evaluation period it might resolve your issue. It could also just be an issue with 64-bit win7? I remember getting drivers to work with xp 64bit was as total PITA

i have it running on my netbook and all drivers automatically detect - stable too
