I have a Dell Vostro 1700, Core 2 duo 2.4, 8600 NVidia, running Vista Home basic.

I have a problem with the touchpad. Firstly, when the computer starts up a process called Apoint starts up that takes over one of the cores completely, using 50% of the CPU and lots of RAM (about a gig). This is a driver for the Alps touchpad.

I can kill this process, which doesn't cause any problems, as the touchpad and my external USB mouse still works.

I want to disable my touchpad if I have an USB mouse connected. I've tried to do this through the mouse settings in the Control panel, but I can't find anything useful there, if I killed the process mentioned above. If the process isn't killed, I can't even access the mouse settings in Control panel, as it stops responding the moment I open it.

I downloaded the latest drivers from Dell (7.1.102.7), but I still have the same problem.

Anyone know what to do regarding this? Someone had the same problem?

    Thanks

Did you download the latest drivers posted in the Touchpad Drivers thread?

To disable when an external mouse is used, open Dell Touchpad panel (not the Windows one, the icon is in the system tray) go to "Device Select" and check the box to disable the touchpad/pointing stick when an external mouse is connected.
