    Hello all,

This has been brought up before in this forum, but it was as an off-topic discussion on a thread with a different topic. I'd like to bring it to full discussion.

Basically, I'm quite happy with my E6400 but I don't use the fingerprint reader, because that involves using the Embassy Trust Suite. This means that you cannot use the fingerprint reader for any other uses except logging on at boot and windows logon screen. You cannot use it for your web browser, for example.

Several people have asked Dell to invest in an open API for the fingerprint reader because of this. Dell suggested we opened a thread in their community feedback site, "Dell IdeaStorm", which I did. Here's the link.

I am asking all of you that are unhappy about this to go there and vote for this idea, to see if Dell finally makes these fingerprint readers useful.

    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about the E6400, but I'm using UPEK Protector Suite on my D620 and it works great. Also running it on a D630 as well.

Yeah, the UPEK software is great (I had it on my HP), but it won't work with the new Precisions and Latitudes because the fingerprint reader is hidden/protected behind a Broadcom USH chip.

Anyway, hats off to this idea, here's hoping Dell listens ...

i promoted it, but its still relatively low ranked compared to some of the others. i think perhaps because the number of precision/latitude owners is probably lower than inspiron:(

they should have a seperate section for latitude/precison owners

anyways good idea about promoting it to dell but whether they listen or not is a different matter

i wonder if the clever linux evangelists have managed to open it up ....
