I want to upgrade the hard drive on my son's Precision M4300 laptop. In reading the review, I see that the Seagate ST9500420AS rates the highest, with the Western Digital Scorpios following. I want to know if anyone has had any experience with the ST9500420AS in this particular laptop. Seagate admits that there are issues with the ASG model in Dell machines, but claim that there are no issues with the AS model. I have seen in some forums that people claim that they have the clicking/freezing problem with the AS models, also. I'm not sure if they actually have the ASG and don't realize it or if there truly is a problem with the AS model in this laptop. I'd like to hear about people's experiences putting this hard drive into this laptop.

I've got ST9250410ASG in E6500. HDD is clicking and freezing constantly. As far as I know it doesn't matter AS or ASG. Seagate also says it does not affect performance, bullsh**..

I think I'll just play it safe and get my son the Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB drive. Let me know if there are any known problems with this drive.

    Are you sure: That's equivalent to a 640GB 7200rpm 2.5" HDD.

See the charts at Tom's Hardware.

Thank you for the information. I guess there is no ideal product, but I've heard that WD is less likely to have this problem than Seagate. My son has a recently replaced Dell drive that clicks and freezes. I guess we'll just have to continue to send it back till we get a quiet one.
Here is some info on the Scorpio Black: "The WD Scorpio Black 320GB uses two 160GB platters to reach the full capacity rating of the drive, and four heads to read the data." http://www.legitreviews.com/article/955/1/
I'll be getting the WD3200BJKT. I'll let you know how it works.
