So I have had the Vostro 1400 for near 8 months now and have been happy with it until recently. About a day prior to the incident I noticed when I would move my screen sometimes the speaker would crackle...The next day while using the computer it started to smell like it was burning and then the right speaker started smoking...I immediatly took the battery out and contacted dell... they sent me out a refurb but its a 1500 and I would rather not have the 1500, I purchased the 1400 for its size.

My question is, would disconecting or replacing the speakers fix my problem?

After I found out what my replacement system was I turned my 1400 back on and ran the diagnostics at start up and found that my right speaker wasnt working...everything else works perfectly...for now.

If anyone has any insight to this it would be appreciated. I would like to keep my 1400 but don't want further issues to arise. Thank you for reading!

It's your right to approve what Dell is sending you back. If you do not want a 1500, TELL THEM, and they will send you a 1400. They are required to send you an equal or equivalent system, and since you can't say one size is better than another without dispute, you can tell them the replacement is unacceptable.

It's hard to say what caused this issue - but since you're under warranty, it's best not to dance around the problem, just make Dell fix it as they should.

    O_O...that's kinda freaky.

Good luck resolving the issue. Hope it doesn't happen again. :S

I've seen this happen with a frayed speaker wire before. The smoke was, probably, the wire casing burning up.

I complained about my audio, and they sent a guy out to replace my speakers and mobo. You should at least be able to get that speaker replaced. :)
