Hit [Windows key]+[R] or just go to "Run..." and type in "msconfig" (without quotes) and then hit enter. You can go to the Startup tab from there and uncheck anything you don't want to start up with your computer.

Generally you can get rid of most of the stuff there, especially if it's not from Microsoft. Try a few things at a time and then reboot. If something goes wrong, you can just go back into msconfig and re-check the boxes you unchecked.

Startup Inspector (Google it) is a great alternative to going to the MSCONFIG dialog. It has a built-in online checker that will give you recommendations as to what to do with certain entries. I also use CCleaner to disable entries that are too stubborn for SI. Good luck.

Some good suggestions already by the other guys to check startup programs and services loading, which in most cases can be optimized for your needs.

I only mention this obvious one because I get so many msgs asking why their system is slower than it should be. Make sure the power profile isn't set to Power Saver - which throttles the system (unless of course you're on battery). Click the battery icon in system tray and set to Balanced Mode if it isn't already.
