Should I keep my M4400 or go for a 8530w

    Hi,

    I'm wondering whether i should return my M4400.

    +++
    - looks nice, works fine
    - incredibly bright led screen

    ---
    - colors on led screen seem washed out (don't know whether that is a general tft issue or applies only for my led display, will check agains my brothers ccfl tft in the m6300)
    - dell control point sucks (profile manager just informed me, that wlan is not supported in the lastest version :confused: )
    - I can apparently not switch back from preboot authentication via smartcard to preboot authentication via password

    Now the HP 8530w FY595AW#ABD has basically the same configuration.

    differences:
    - hp has 1x2gb ram instead of dell 2x1gb ram
    - hp has a fingerprint reader (I configured my m4400 without one)
    - 250gb harddrive instead of 160gb
    - 2mp webcam instead of no webcam
    - wsxga ccfl display (resolution is ok for me) instead of wxga led tft
    - bluetooth instead of no bluetooth

    - biggest difference: as shop annoncments say: the hp with all the extras given above (bt, webcam, 250gb hdd) is about 100 EUR cheaper than my dell configuration (price for hp is 1779.26 shipping included)

    con hp: not available yet (should be in one week or so)

    What do you think?

    That's a fair choice. I did note that this is the only other laptop with a 770M in my M4400 review. And the webcam is a lot better if you're into taking pictures, the M4400 comes with a 640x480 0.3MP camera. The screen of course is personally what you like. I have heard not just a few say the LED screen is too bright for normal usage anyway, and you wouldn't lose out pn a CCFL. The deal looks good too. Now it's all chassis and build quality (and maybe looks), although Lenovos are generally built similarly in quality with Dell, and possibly the 1700M with the Dell if you are needing a stronger graphics card.

    Another laptop with 770M is the Fujitsu-Siemens Celsius H270 - what comes out ca. in 15.October. They has an WSXGA+ Resolution and a Dual-Link DVI-Port for 30" Monitors.

    Those were the main contenders for me aswell

    HP 8530w - Dell M4400 - Fujitsu Siemens H265

    I ordered my M4400 this week and hope i did the right thing....will keep a look out for the HP though and if it seems better (after testing the m4400 myself) i could always swap. I didn't expect the HP to turn out cheaper though...maybe different when configuring it higher?

    Hope to see some pics and experiences of the HP soon!!

    Hmm so the 15.4" LED has washed out colors also. I was gonna order it to replace my 14.1" LED because I'm not happy with the screen, but how having second thoughts...My other choice was a wsxga+ from HP business too, but I've seen one of those in person (a 6710b) and I know that the 1680 resolution in a 15.4" makes everything too small for me...

    Also, what kind of displays are you coming from - if you're coming from a decent desktop display, most laptops screens are gonna seem washed out, even a relatively good one.

    Yes, I'm coming from CRTs (i know that they all look better than LCDs)
    But there are some things I cannot accept with my M4400 like too many light colors disappear and dark tones appear notedly brighter.
    Seams to my that the "brighness difference" between black and dark tones is considerably bigger than between dark and midtones (brightness is not allocated linearly)

    @ejcf
    If comparing the m4400 you should really look at the 8530w and not the 6710b...not really in the same league is it? And what laptop do you mean with the 14,1" screen?

    @grio
    Did you check which panel you got? The LG one or the Samsung one? I really hope the 2ccfl screen will look better (is supposed to be better) But if 1920x1200 is too small for you as well then that's not really an option. You would expect any screen on these series of laptops, going by what we pay for it, to be excellent though.

    Oh I was talking about my e6400 w/14.1" LED screen that I haven't been very happy with (the screen, that is...the rest of the laptop has been pretty good). Since I like the rest of the laptop I was thinking about exchanging it for an e6500 w/WXGA+ LED screen, which has the same screen as the m4400. I just mentioned the 6710b because its the only laptop from HP's business line I've actually used in person. Both the 8530w and 6710b are offered with WSXGA+ 15.4" screens and I was just saying that that resolution crammed into a 15.4" screen is a bit small for me (that's ~129 dpi and I think that max I'd like is ~120 dpi which is about what WXGA+ on a 14.1" is).
