I am hating this drive big time.. performance is good, but the heat on left side of the palm rest is unberable. After few mins of placing the palm on left hand rest it is burning my veins lol... I still feel the burn sensation for long time even after taking the hand out.

All the guys w/ Segate 250G 7200rpm experience the same? I have 2 E6400s, both have same HD, same heat problem. Seems like a bad designed drive... probably have to start looking at SSDs, but damn those too expensive!!!

Typically, the hard drive should run much hotter than 40C to 50C; have you actually checked the HDD temps?

If they're actually way out there, you may have just gotten a dud HDD; I'm fairly certain don't have any problems with HDD heat, even with 7200RPM drives. For the record, the 80GB, 5400RPM drive I had with my first E6400 probably ran about 30C to 40C on average.

Most likely replacing your current drive with a different HDD will solve your problem. You may even get Dell to do it for you under warranty.

Yeah, I'm saying you should try a different brand of HDD, since you've got two machines with the same drive...

my hitachi 7K320 320G 7200rpm in vostro 1400 runs at 35C, seagate 320G 5400rpm in HP G60 runs at 46C, WD 320G 5400 rpm in second HP G60 runs at 40C. the difference is obvious.

The Seagate 7200.3 family are relatively power-hungry. See the Tom's Hardware charts. And power = heat.

Almost any other HDD will run cooler.

    Hi guys,

I'm not sure on exact temperatures, but my 500GB Scorpio Blue drive is great., Very fast (actually on a par with 7200rpm drivers) and quiet; no problems so far. If you need the extra space, coolguy1, you could consider one of these drives.

    Kind regards,

I replaced it w/ WD Black 250GB 7200rpm, now the left palm rest heat is slightly bearable now. Soon have to probably go w/ 5400rpm or SSD to reduce the heat even further

Can't believe dell selling segate 7200.3 250G 7200rpm w/ soo much heat issues.. its just unbearable!!!

could you at least check your temps with HWmonitor to see if it IS actually your HDD? Why are you certain it is? I really hope it's not because the heats comes from the side the HDD is placed

 My E6400 has the HDD on the left side. However, it's on the right side when the computer is upside down.
