this is not just for the M6400...it's for all compatible seagate drives. Will try running it now as it says to fix the clicking experienced by a lot of users

    I have the ST9200 423 ASG (200GB 7k2 rpm)

I used a FreeDOS bootable USB memry stick and the DE16.bat method, instead of the .iso method, it upgraded in about 60 seconds.

Not entirely convinced it has done much though, I was in "quiet" mode before, but there was no/little difference between "quiet" and "performance"modes.

after the upgrade I didn't notice any difference, so switched to "performance" mode to see it there was still any difference, if anything it's quieter in performance mode now ... the backgound "tink-tink" seems almost inaudible.

I haven't checked to see to if it's faster in "quiet" mode ;-)

    great tip, thanks :)

for anyone not sure how to make a bootable usb stick, go here........http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

that tic is a little quieter now i think, not much though:rolleyes:

    P.S.

to confirm the upgrade, go to device manager/disk drives- select disk-right click/properties/details tab/Hardware ids.............should give you a string with DE16 at the end!

One strange thing I've noticed ...

If I create a bootable SD card (using a Cruzer USB->SD adapter) with that utility it works fine, if I then place the SD card direct into the laptop's SD slot, XP thinks the card is unformatted.

If it is a SDHC SD card - and you are running XP - you need to install the hotfix. XP does not recognize SDHC SDs without it.

Thanks, but it's only a 128MB, if I format the SD card while it's in the SD slot it's fine, an dif I move it to the USB cruzer it's still fine (just not bootable)

Perhaps the issue is how the HP Bootable USB util is formatting it? Maybe on eis using a hard disk style boot sector, and the other a floppy style boot sector.
