I have a Precision M4300. I just reinstalled Win XP Pro, along with the current Dell drivers. Also updated to SP3.

Anyway, I now see (I am docked) a momentary blanking of the monitor just after the desktop appears. Apparently, purely a cosmetic effect. What is causing this and is there a way to eliminate it?

    Thanks,
    Harvey

have you tried disabling all start-up items with msconfig to see if a program is causing this?

If you are using an Integrated Intel GPU, then disable "igfxtray" and "igfxpers" from startup using msconfig(start-run-"msconfig"[without quotes]-Startup).

No. I have googled the issue, and found that it appears in both Vista and xp. The xp issue appears to be related to the Intel integrated graphics - not the discrete one in the Precision. I was hoping that some one had run into this before.

    Thanks,
    Harvey

In Vista it seems to commonly be associated with TMM; secondary monitors.

    Does XP also have TMM?
Instructions for turning it off in Vista are here

You might check and see if XP has something similar. I know XP has Task Scheduler.

XP has a Task Scheduler which is set to Automatic, I don't see any TMM stuff.
In fact, the Administrative Tools area is different than from Vista.

    Thanks,
    Harvey

O.K., finally figured out what the problem was - nothing complex.

For some reason, my 1908FP was set to a 75 Hz. refresh rate instead of 60 Hz. Resetting it to 60 Hz. stopped the blanking out of the screen (it was apparently syncing to the 75 Hz. refresh rate).
