Hi I'm trying to replace the right side fan in my Dell M6400. However the fan that's broken is 5 pin. But the replacement I bought is 4 pin.

Am I right in thinking the extra wire is a temp sensor? It seems to be a black wire which is just shorted to 2 pins.. where's the sensor? In that black wire?

Also the other thing to note is the colours are reversed in the 4pin. Are the colours univeral?

I suppose my question ultimately is, could you get this fan to work and how would you do it? I'm an audio tech so am good with a soldering iron. Would you just cut wires above the black sleeve and rejoin to the old fan wires and connector? And would you connect colours together? red-red, blue-blue etc. or join pin numbers? pin1 - pin1, pin2-pin2 desoite the differing colours.

    Thanks for any help
    David

There is no temp sensor on the fan. Those are all on the motherboard.

I'd just try using this fan as-is and seeing if it works. Just make sure all the remaining wires are in the same order and connected to the same pins as those on the old fan.

Hi, Thanks. When you say 'as is', you mean just plug in without matching wire colours or anything? Couldn't I damage something?
Is there anyway of giving a test first of all? eg. plugging a battery up to it and seeing if both fans spin with the same 2 wires connected to a power source etc.
Not sure what's best to ensure I don't break anything.

Any way I can get the pin outs for both 4 pin and 5 pin connectors so I can compare?

I chickened out and just took the 2 pieces apart and just stuck some valve oil round the pin of the old fan and put it back in. Works again now. Or at least it's prosponed the issue for another day !
