On the E6400, the lights on the backlit keyboard are white. They can be configured through Dell ControlPoint and turned on and off quickly by holding down the "FN" key and pressing the right arrow key.

There's actually three modes for the backlighting: always off, always on, or ALS dependent. In the always off state, it backlight never turns on. In the always on state, the backlight turns on whenever you type. In the ALS dependent state, the backlight turns on whenever you type, depending on whether the ALS thinks its dark enough to warrant it. Or that's what I've determined by playing with mine.

By default, I don't think that there actually is a way to keep the backlighting on all the time, but there might be a hack or something?

In the Dell Controlpoint software, you can also adjust the brightness of the keyboard lighting, if you want to do that.

you could turn on the turn off time to 5 minutes or whatever the highest is and itd probably be around the same, but i agree.

Even without the Control Point software you should be able to flip through these default modes. As others have mentioned, the CP software allows you to tweak it further; you can adjust the brightness, set it to stay on longer, etc.

Off-topic, but here goes: press Fn+Space. If you have a backlit keyboard, you'll find a symbol on the left side of the Space key.

HP even created a page covering that.
