Hi all, I'm gonna purchase a notebook this July and have some questions about Dell Precision m4600.

First I 99% planned to get a Clevo P151EM/P150EM (main purposes are programming, doing photoshop stuffs, drawing, video editing and moderate gaming), then recently I was impressed by Dell Precision m4600 by its cooling system (dual fans for CPU/GPU like Clevo P series), better keyboard, premium IPS panel and sexy look with the metal case.

Specs that I've considered so far:

    Core i7 2760qm
    AMD FirePro M5950
    8GB 1333MHz RAM
    IPS RGB+ 1080p screen

    1. Is the "fan issue" a problem of m4600? I searched on the Internet and this forum, found that quite a lot of people had problems with the fan(s): fan(s) running full speed all the time even idle which is pretty loud, fan speed spins up and down very frequent.

I found some videos on youtube which shows the noise of m4600 when not doing the intensive stuffs (maybe idle or web browsing):

    Fansound M4600 - YouTube
Annoying fannoise of dell precision m4600 - YouTube

Along with the video there are comments which most of them mentioned about then fan issue. My environment is very quiet so if the fans are loud even when idle or spin up and down so frequent, it will be a deal breaker.

    2. If I game on this notebook (COD, Metro 2033...) with a cooling pad (notepal U3), will it be overheat?

    3. Does AMD FirePro M5950 support switchable graphics with 1080p IPS RGB+ screen?

So far Dell Precision m4600 is the only machine that made me consider choosing my notebook again. I have been hesitating between P151EM and m4600 for a while, any help is appreciated.

Sorry for long post and thanks in advance.

Some have definitely complained about the Fans, but I do not find them to be a problem...I did do a re-paste using AS5 on the CPU/GPU and noticed an improvement.

Do the fans cycle - yes, but thats thier job to speed up as you get above ambiant temps and cool things down. It is definitely not any louder than any other laptop I have owned.

The Cooling system on the M4600 is very good, and above average for many laptops.

Can you game with this, sure, and better than most laptops becuase it does have a decent cooling system.

I have played COD4, BF3, etc with no issues.

    Thanks dave-p, rep+.

Guess I should test the machine right away at the store, may find a quiet room to use it and see how the fans perform. If possible maybe I will re-paste the GPU and CPU. Luckily the store offers refund in 7 days if I have any problems with the machine. Really overall m4600 is so good to get it, the perfect combination of gaming + graphic intensive work.:D

If I place 2 fans of Notepal U3 cooling pad under the CPU and GPU intake, will it help with the cooling? And does AMD FirePro M5950 support dual graphics (Intel HD 3000 + M5950) switching?

Cooling pads can help but the ambiant temperature of the room plays a factor as well. but needless to say more air flow = cooler system

The Firepro does not support the intel graphics, you have to have a NVIDEA GPU for that option.

And a repaste for the CPU/GPU is definitely a good ideal at some point,as most stock thermal paste is not the best out there, and I find is usually dry before too long. I tend to do at least an annual cleaning -by removing the fans and heat pipes, and repaste.
