Proper GPU temperature for M4400? and how to downclock?

Hi, I bought a M4400 with 770M and WUXGA from Dell Outlet a week ago for $730 after 20% discount coupon including tax. (I'm writing the price just in case people are curious...)

I was playing a game for 20 minutes. The fan started running louder then few minutes later the laptop rebooted. After the reboot, my system froze at the start up, at which point I had to hard reboot.

This happened once. I am going to test it tonight if this happens every time I play a 3D game.

Before I go check if my laptop is a total failure, I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced the same problem.

My bios is A11 and when I ran the game for 10 minutes, I observed the GPU temperature goes up to 75 Celsius degree using GPU-Z.

Oh, and, I read there is an automatic downclock issue with 770M. At which temperature does that happen?


On totally different subject, does anyone know how to downclock the GPU? My game is not a high-end game. I am pretty sure 770M can handle it with half the clock or so. But when I run the game, 770M goes up to full clock making the fan run louder. I installed RivaTuner, but I could not find the downclock option. I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that I am using the quadro driver from Dell website.

So.. any idea on who to deliberately downclock the GPU?

Download nVidia system tools. Go to the performance settings, agree with the disclaimer and you can set the clock lower or higher as you want.

When i experienced downclocking (in BIOS A06 and onwards) it happened at 105celsius, which seems to be the actual safety limit from nVidia (read that at some point) Later BIOS versions seem to downclock even earlier in the 90's area

My advice, as always, stick with BIOS A02 or A03, downloads are here http://ftp1.us.dell.com/bios/

 

No, that's not normal behavior...where are you located? what OS are you using? I'd call DELL Support and get it handled if any of that happens again.

ps: quadro driver is funky for gaming I think, although I don't experience any unnecessary down throttling for what I do. My machine stays incredibly cool, much cooler than my other three laptops...1 acer and 2 asus's.

 

I don't think you should need to down clock a 770m. You should be able to run that at stock speeds without an issue. I know people are having problems with the 1700m running hot but has anyone had this issue with a 770m?

Have you tried updating the graphics card driver. Dell released a new driver yesterday.

Also make sure that the air vents are free of obstructions when you are gaming. When I am running very demanding applications I like to prop the back of my laptop up a little so that the air can circulate a under the laptop better or use a laptop cooler.

I would not down clock the performance will suffer. If new drivers don't help I would contact Dell. You should be able to run this from Dell as is without this type of issue.
