OK, Dell support informs me they have escalated the issue and this link to QA, and will get back to me. I'll keep you updated, so far they act very professionally.

In the meantime, I've completed a report to the SpeedFan developer with the whole specs of the Dell 08V9YG (M4600) motherboard, hopefully this will help him to get it supported in case Dell doesn't fix it themselves.

It's actually fine for most of the time, but every couple of minutes, the fan started suddenly with noise for a few seconds, which gave me heart attack all the time:eek:
I tried multiple M4600 laptops in my company with different specifications, all of them have such an issue:(

Like TradeItEasy said, I wish it could maintain at low speed constantly instead of the current design. It could be a much better experience.

Let's see what they could do with the fan table.

I wish that they were at low speed constantly, too.

That would be better compared to say, turning off and turning on every minute.

This is a pain. I did check and the CPU is stuck at 800MHz with a smaller AC adapter. I tried disabling QuickCharge, running without a battery, but nothing works.

Has anyone found anyway to run at a normal speed while on a smaller AC adapter than the monster 180W?

Thank you Theora for following this up.

I experience the very same issue with my brand new M4600. I work in a very quiet place at times and the fan starting every 20 seconds is driving me nuts.

For the rest, I am very pleased with my M4600. I hope this issue will be solved and it will be my best laptop so far.

I'm glad I'm not the only one hoping for a fix for this fan issue.
Dell contacted me this morning to close the case, but insured me QA is investigating the issue and has read these two pages. If they could bring a fan management on par with Apple or Lenovo, that would be by far the best laptop I've ever owned.... even better than my trusted Thinkpad.

In the meantime, I've contacted SpeedFan developper and issued a bug report for the M4600. The latest beta (4.46b2) brings some level of support but the fans are still overridden by the BIOS. Hopefully a new release will bring a complete manual fan management.
0001934: Fans not controlable / overridden on Dell Precision M4600 mobile workstation - Almico's Bug Tracker

Here again we're not alone, scroll down the bug tracker list and you'll see many, many people hoping for a Precision fan control.

Finally, to those like me who can't stand the cyclic fan noise, make sure you have the proper Dell graphic pilot and NOT the latest Catalyst, as they won't underclock the FirePro at its idle speed (tried it for you...). Also, make sure Flash Player never uses hardware acceleration, for it will stuck the GPU at its maximum speed. This should make the fan blow less often.

    Hello,

Can I add a small SSD to the Dell M4600 and configure it just to act as a cache? Like Intel Smart Response Technology, Samsung Express Cache, Dell CacheCade etc etc?

Got my Backlit keyboard in today, and it works like a charm. :)

So I can confirm it is the same as the Dell Latitude E6520

    Cheers

Theora, you are so great! I've got my M4600 days ago, I like it so much, so far, except the fan noisy problem keeps bothring me. I ever talked to DELL support guy online, and they told me that they don't have any solution currently for resolving that, they recommended me the Speedfan. I tried Speedfan i found it just doesn't work. Actually the HWiNFO 64 has similar fan control which also not works for M4600. I think we really have to wait for the BIOS or software update from DELL, hopefully they could make it done quickly!
